The twin-transition and the energy performance of buildings directive: the future of construction passes through MIBA 2025
image
The construction sector is currently experiencing a crucial period in history: the challenge of the twin-transition (ecological and digital) and the need to drastically reduce emissions. By 2030,the energy performance of buildings directive requires new buildings to achieve zero emissions, while existing buildings will have to undergo major energy upgrades. An epochal change, which sees the redevelopment of buildings as an engine of development for the sector.

MIBA 2025 (Milan International Building Alliance), on from 19-21 November 2025 at Fiera Milano, will be the international hub for addressing these issues. The event will see the synergy of four key trade exhibitions: MADE Expo, the leader for innovative solutions in the construction industry; GEE - Global Elevator Exhibition, dedicated to mobility; SMART BUILDING EXPO, focusing on automation and technology; and SECURITY, the benchmark for security & fire. MADE Expo will extend its duration by one day, closing on 22 November.

To support the sector, Fiera Milano commissioned the Politecnico di Milano, MIBA's scientific partner, to set up an Observatory to analyse scenarios and trends. The first study presented focuses on the impacts of the Green Homes Directive, outlining three future scenarios:

- Business-As-Usual (BAU) scenario: stable investments with energy savings to 2035 equal to 65% of the EPBD targets.

- Policy-Driven Scenario: strict enforcement of the regulations, with higher investments and 95% energy savings compared to EPBD targets.

- Ambitious Scenario: the most challenging, it involves record-breaking investments and exceeding EPBD targets, stimulated by effective regulations, incentives and a responsible market.

With 75% of the building stock inefficient and over 85% of existing buildings still in use in 2050, the Renovation Wave becomes an essential strategy for reducing the environmental burden of the sector. Success will depend on clear policies, incentives and technological innovation.

MADE Expo, in this context, confirms its role as the central pillar of MIBA, fostering the development of sustainable and innovative solutions. An essential event for the future of construction and the transition toward more sustainable buildings and cities.
